Twenty-five local nonprofits recently received a total of $62,941 from the Tioga County Senior Citizens Foundation. Distributions were made in September to organizations that serve the needs and interests of older adults residing in Tioga County, N.Y.
Recipients in the 2019 competitive grant process included all eight libraries of Tioga County for the purchase of large print books and books on CD/DVD; six senior citizen clubs that applied for funding to purchase supplies, room rental, and program costs; the Apalachin Lions Foundation for funding that will allow them to include senior residents of Campville and Crestview at their annual dinner; Catholic Charities Tompkins / Tioga, Tioga Outreach for emergency assistance for the elderly; the Coburn Free Library for their handicap accessible entrance and bathroom project; to Helping Hands Food Pantry for gift cards for recipients of food and vouchers during the upcoming holidays; to Mercy House of the Southern Tier, Inc. for a lift chair for resident rooms; to Northern Tioga Neighbors Network for volunteer support and program development; to Project Neighbor of Newark Valley for personal hygiene and dental care items added to food packages; to the Tioga County Open Door Mission for emergency assistance for the elderly; Tioga County Rural Ministry for emergency assistance for the elderly; to Tioga Opportunities, Inc. for food and supplies for the Home Delivered Meals Program and food to stock the food pantries and soup kitchen serving nine communities; and to the VFW Post 1371 for handicap accessible elevator repair.
Fifteen volunteer board members, selected from all parts of the county, direct the Foundation’s activities. Since its beginning in 1982, the Tioga County Senior Citizens Foundation has donated over 2.1 million dollars for projects and services that benefit Tioga County’s older citizens.
